The San Francisco Giants will begin their eight-game road stretch on Tuesday when they travel east to take on the Washington Nationals. After falling to the San Diego Padres, the Giants bounced back with 3-1 series win over the Colorado Rockies. Meanwhile, the Nationals dropped a home series to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Dereck Rodriguez is expected to get the start for the Giants, while the Nationals roll out right-handed veteran Stephen Strasburg.
Giants lose the finale but win the series
The Giants failed to complete the sweep against the Rockies on Sunday, but they did manage to win their first series of the season. So the good outweighed the bad on a night when they were shut out on offense.

And it was really, really bad.

The Giants nearly gave up a no-hitter to German Marquez, who came within a couple of innings of the majestic feat. However, Evan Longoria finally connected on a pitch in the eighth inning to put an end to Marquez’s run.

On the defensive side, lefty Derek Holland got the start on the mound for the Giants. Over a span of six innings, he allowed four hits, four runs and walked two, while retiring six batters in the game. Things quickly settled down once the relief help got their shot at the Rockies. Travis Bergen, Trevor Gott and Nick Vincent all combined for one hit and zero runs scored in the 4-0 loss. It marked the third time this season the Giants have been shut out in a game.
Nationals come up short in the ninth inning
The Nationals missed on an opportunity to take their first home series in Sunday’s loss to the Pirates. It was a nail-biter that came down to Jason Martin grounding a double at the top of the ninth inning that sent in a tiebreaking run. Nationals closer Wander Suero gave up the game-winning hit after Max Scherzer held the Pirates scoreless for five innings.

Scherzer struggled on the mound early in the game by giving up three runs in the first three innings. However, the Nationals didn’t concede to those struggles and continued to ride him all the way to the ninth inning. It was a wise choice considering how quickly he settled into the game and started shutting down the Pirates’ bats.

Going cold on offense must have been contagious because the Nationals faced those same struggles down the stretch. The only difference is they didn’t have a Martin knocking in the game-winner. They stayed cold for the rest of the game after the third inning. Adam Eaton came across home plate twice after getting two hits, while Howie Kendrick netted one run and an RBI off a double to center in the 4-3 loss.

The New York Mets will try to put the Philadelphia Phillies on the ropes when the NL East rivals meet in Game 2 of their ensuing three-game series. An all-offensive game ended with Mets PH Juan Lagares scoring the game-winning run in extra innings (11th) on an error by Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins. Steven Matz is expected to occupy the mound for the Mets in the rematch opposite of Philadelphia’s Nick Pivetta.
Pitching problems linger for the Mets
After taking a commanding two-game lead in the series, the Mets suffered pitching meltdowns in back-to-back games against the Braves. First, it was Jason Vargas and Corey Oswalt giving up a combined nine runs in a span of only 3.3 innings, and then it was pitching ace and two-time All-Star Jacob deGrom giving up four walks, five hits and three runs, including two homers.
There were more questions than answers for the Mets after blowing it on the road and splitting the four-game series with the Braves.

“I’m not really throwing the ball where I want to right now,” deGrom said, via ESPN.com. “Kind of cutting the fastball, yanking the slider, changeup is good at times but at other times it’s not. I don’t know if it’s something mechanical. I’ll have to get in there and figure it out.”

Although the Mets managed to steal Game 1 on the road against the Phillies on Monday, the pitching still struggled with Noah Syndergaard getting the start. The former MLB All-Star struck out nine batters in five innings, while also allowing nine hits, five earned runs and walking three.
Fortunately for the Mets, their bats came through, in the end, to propel the offense this time. Brandon Nimmo cracked a home run over the wall and turned a walk into a run, while Jeff McNeil finished with three hits in five at-bats in the 7-6 victory.
Can Phillies continue to lean on starters?
Does anyone remember when the Phillies were getting by in spite of their pitching? That narrative hasn’t completely changed, but it has been altered to some degree. While the Phillies starting rotation is still far from being considered trustworthy, they have shown some signs of improvement in recent outings.

Take the previous series against the Marlins for example. Righty Vince Velasquez held them to one run and two hits, while striking out four, in his six innings on the mound in Game 3. That standout performance followed Jake Arrieta’s gem in Game 1—eight strikeouts, while allowing only five hits and one run.

Where is Game 2, you ask? Well, that game would count as one of those in spite of pitching performances. It remains to be seen if the Phillies can actually rely on their pitching finally getting to a point of consistency. That would be the next logical step in the team improving from a previous 80-82 record.

It was another step backwards on Monday night with Aaron Nola on the mound. The right-handed pitcher gave up seven hits, five runs and walked three in four innings. However, the Phillies were in the game all the way up until Hoskins failed to come up with a grounder at first base in the 11th inning, leading to a Mets victory.

The Detroit Tigers open a two-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Comerica Park on Tuesday night.
Detroit’s Matt Boyd is scheduled to start Tuesday’s series opener against the Pirates. Boyd has looked to be in top form for the Detroit Tigers for much of the time he’s spent on the mound so far in 2019. However, looking at Boyd’s career numbers vs. Pittsburgh brings up some unflattering stats. Let’s take a look into Matt Boyd’s career stats against the Pirates and if his current form can bring him redemption.

Matt Boyd vs. Pittsburgh- A History
In his career, Matt Boyd has made just two starts against Pittsburgh, both of those for Detroit in 2017 and 2018. It is a small sample size to look at, but his largest ERA against a single team that he has made multiple starts against does belong to Pittsburgh at 10.57. That ERA of over ten comes from just under eight innings total pitched in his career against the Pirates.

In his 2017 start, Boyd was given the loss after surrendering six runs on nine hits to the Pirates in just four innings pitched. 2018 did not offer much improvement, giving up four runs on seven hits in just three and 2/3 innings. Again, these two starts are a small sample size, but it is interesting to see if Boyd can use his recent form to right the ship, or if the Pirates truly just have his number.

Will Tuesday Bring Improvement?
In three starts so far this season, Matt Boyd has looked at times unstoppable. In fact, Boyd currently leads the entire MLB in strikeouts per nine innings averaging 15.058. That mark is largely due to his impressive 23 Ks in just his first two starts alone. In his two career starts against Pittsburgh, Boyd has just eight combines punch outs.

With Jordan Zimmermann struggling in recent starts and Matt Moore set to be out for longer than initially expected, it is key for Boyd to stay in peak form as long as possible. Baseball may be one of the toughest things to predict on the planet, but if his recent performances have shown us anything, it is that Boyd’s momentum should be enough to exercise his past demons against Pittsburgh and have a strong showing against the men in black and yellow once and for all on Tuesday night.

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees hook up for the first time this season tonight in the
Bronx. The year hasn’t started off great for either of these historic rivals, as they both find
themselves looking up in the AL East standings, but they have a chance to start righting the ship in
tonight’s featured MLB matchup.
Red Sox vs. Yankees Preview

The Red Sox enter tonight’s game with a mark of 6-11 (10-6-1 O/U), which leaves them 6.5 games
behind the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. The team wrapped up a four-game home set with the
Baltimore Orioles yesterday, falling by a score of 9-1.

The Yankees had yesterday off after closing out a three-game home series versus the Chicago White
Sox on Sunday. New York dropped two of three to Chicago, and they check in with a record of 6-9
(8-7 O/U) on the year, leaving them 5.5 games back of the Rays.

Boston Red Sox

On Monday, Boston couldn’t get much going on offense, generating just four hits and a single run.
That wasn’t an issue for Baltimore, as they slapped 10 hits while sending eight batters across home
plate. The Red Sox went 2-2 in the series. On the road this year, the team is just 3-8.

Chris Sale gets the start tonight. He’s 0-3 thus far with a 1.54 WHIP, 9.00 ERA, and 8 Ks over 13.0
IP. Sale only lasted four innings in his last start, giving up five earned runs in a losing effort versus
the Toronto Blue Jays. J.D. Martinez tops the team in batting with an average of .344. Mitch
Moreland is the team leader with five homers, 12 RBIs, and a 1.165 OPS.

New York Yankees

New York fell by a score of 5-2 to the White Sox on Sunday. A Tim Anderson grand slam off of
starter Carlos Rodon in the top of the 4th proved to be the difference maker. At home on the young
season, the Yankees are 3-6.

James Paxton will be on the mound this evening. He’s 1-2 this year with a 6.00 ERA, 1.73 WHIP,
and 19 Ks over 15.0 IP. Paxton lasted four innings against the Houston Astros in his last start, giving
up five earned runs in a losing effort. DJ LeMahieu leads the team with a .396 BA, while Luke Voit
is tops with 14 RBIs. Gary Sanchez has the team lead with six dongs, but he’s on the 10-day IL.

Red Sox vs. Yankees Prediction

Both starters were shaky in their last outings, so this one may come down to the bullpens. The
Yankees get the edge on that front with a 3.65 collective ERA versus 4.46 for Red Sox relievers.
We’ll go with the hosts to get the victory.
